"The Do's"

The best form of maintenance is frequent, regular cleanings. A little bit of cleaning on a regular basis is preferable to a major cleaning on a sporadic basis.

The best method of preventative maintenance is to ensure that the sink is clean and dry when not in use. Rinse and towel dry the sink after each use in order to minimize major cleanups. (This is particularly appropriate where water may have a high mineral content.)

Keep the sink fixture free of any standing water which may build up mineral deposits. The quality of your water can affect your sinks appearance (particularly a designer color such as Jade) and this water quality will vary from household to household.

Should a mineral deposit build up over time, use vinegar to remove the deposit and follow this by flushing the surface with water. To clean your sink, use the mildest procedure that will do the job effectively.

Use a damp cloth, or sponge with a solution of dishwashing liquid to remove everyday stains from your sink.

More stubborn stains can be removed by scrubbing with an abrasive pad such as ScotchBrite, or any mild abrasive cleanser such as Ajax . (Granite sinks only)

If a stain becomes engrained in the bowl, mix a solution of 40 parts water with 1 part bleach (or biological washing powder), and soak the bowl surface overnight. Then drain and rinse thoroughly with water. This is not to be used as a routine cleaning.

Your Granite sink is made from an extremely hard and tough material. Any metal pots or pans dragged across the bottom of the sink will leave a metal residue. This marking is actually on the surface of the sink and can be removed by scrubbing in a circular manner with a soft nylon brush and a liquid soap.

Try to avoid dropping sharp objects into the sink as they may damage the surface. We recommend using wire bottom grid accessories to avoid this type of damage.

"The Dont's"

Always avoid the use of metal scouring pads, or wire wool, as they will leave a metal residue on the surface of the sink. Over time these minute particles will rust and then give the appearance that the surface of the sink has stained.

Do not leave any mild steel or cast iron cookware or implements anywhere on the sink for extended periods of time. The combined presence of iron and moisture can only lead to staining of the sink.

Do not leave rubber dish mats, wet sponges, or cleaning pads in the sink overnight as they will trap water which could lead to staining and discoloration of the sink surface.

Do not let concentrated bleaches or products containing chlorinated solvents (paint strippers) or products containing formic acid (drain cleaner or kettle descaler) come into contact with the surface of the sink. They may cause discoloration.

Any accidental contact with these materials should be addressed by an immediate cleaning and rinsing of the sink.

Granite has a high heat resistance of 536 centigrade and will be virtually unaffected by brief exposure to objects at this temperature. However, we do not recommend that the sink be used as a cooling place for hot objects ...please use a separate insulated board or tray for that purpose.

Do not use your sink as a cutting surface.

Slate floors are popular in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and slightly outdoor areas (i.e. verandas) because the natural stone is waterproof, making it a good choice where moisture may be present. Slate is very durable, doesn't require much maintenance, and due to its dark coloring, hides dirt well. Is it the right flooring material for you though? Let's take a look at the pros and cons:

Advantages

  • Slate is a tough stone that can take a beating.
  •  It resists water well.
  •  It's easy to care for.
  • Slate doesn't just come in grays and blacks but in a range of beautiful, subtle hues that    can enhance many decors.
  •  It works nicely in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and on porches.

Disadvantages

  • Slate is expensive in comparison to other flooring materials (though unlike with granite and marble, a do-it-yourself type can install it).
  • It's cold and hard underfoot.
  • If highly polished, slate can be slippery.
  • Slate floors don't absorb sound very well.

A stone fireplace design, regardless of whether it is natural stone or cast, is a symbol of beauty and elegance that will last a lifetime. This article gives you some of the basics on any stone fireplace design.

One of the things that make all stone fireplaces unique is that no two are alike. No matter if you have two made in the same design with the same natural stone they will still be different. Stones will vary in color and texture.

With any stone fireplace design you can go for a basic design or you can also get as intricate as you would like. You are only limited by your imagination.

You can find limestone hearths as well as hearths made from granite and tile if you choose. All of these can be sized to fit your particular specifications.

Many homeowners design their stone fireplace to fit into the natural surroundings of the area they live in.

One of the biggest benefits with a stone fireplace design is safety. Stone is the safest material to build any type of fireplace with. It will also hold up much better over the years than other materials. And unlike these other materials, you can also use stone just as easily in the outdoors. An outdoor stone fireplace design is yet another option.

You can design your fireplace in a country style, as well as a classical or contemporary design. The choices are virtually endless.

Don't forget, stone also makes for a beautiful fireplace surround and in some cases even a mantel.

Looking at stone fireplace gives you an incredible calmness. It is so soothing and relaxing. So, if you have been considering a new fireplace, take a look at a stone fireplace design.

There is nothing more homey than a fireplace in the living room or bedroom. You may even consider spicing up a traditional brick hearth by replacing it with stone. Building your own stone fireplace can save you money and add a personal touch to your home.

Things You'll Need;Mortar pan ; Masonry trowel ; Masonry nails ; Mason's hammer ; Router ;

Saw with diamond-tipped blade ; Grout float ; Grout ; Nail gun ; Cultured stone ; Wood stain ;Sealer ; Wood glue ; Lumber ; 2 by 4s ; Slate ; Plywood ; Sponge ; Mortar mix .

Steps

1Step One

Measure around the fireplace. Use those measurements to make a template on a wood board with painter's tape.

2Step Two

Choose the type of stone you want to use. Visit the Fireplaces website for ideas of which stone will suit your home best (see Resources bos). Place the stone in a tight pattern to fit your template. Cut the stone with a saw with a diamond-tipped blade to ensure a good fit.

3Step Three

Stir mortar mix with water in a pan. The mortar should have the consistency of cake batter.

4Step Four

Apply mortar with your trowel to the back of each stone only. Install the stone on the hearth, following the pattern you developed in the first step.

5Step Five

Cut three 2 by 4 pieces of wood to become the frame. Use a nail gun to support them.

6Step Six

Lay stone to the mantel using mortar. After the mortar has dried, add more mortar to any cracks between stones.

7Step Seven

Build the wooden hearth by cutting a plywood frame that will fit inside of the firebox. Attach 2 by 4s to the underside of the hearth using a nail gun and wood glue. Place the hearth inside the firebox and install slate against the hearth frame using mortar.

8Step Eight

Add grout to the spaces between the stones with a grout flout. Use a wet sponge to wipe away any excess grout. After it's dry, apply a sealer between the pieces of slate.

9Step Nine

Measure the length of the fireplace and cut wood to fit for a mantel. If desired, add a design to the edges of the mantel with a router. Attach it to the underside of the mantel with a nail gun.

Natural stone tiles are distinct and unique.

You should always view several pieces of the tile that is to be installed before the installation begins. Since it has been created by nature, not only are no two pieces exactly alike, those two pieces may not even be very similar.

The most common natural stone tiles include:

Slate, flagstone (sandstone), marble, granite, travertine and limestone. Each stone has unique characteristics and maintenance requirements.

Generally, you should seal natural stone tile before grouting, unless you are planning on using the grout color in the stone as a design element.

Most natural stones are not resistant against common household acids (like lemon juice) or oil stains.

Therefore, you should use a penetrating sealer for all natural stones after installation. Follow manufacturers instructions on frequency of re-application.

The advantages of natural stone

  • Timeless, unique appearance
  • Design capabilities of through-body color material
  • Perceived value
  • Durable countertops and floors (granite)
  • May be re-polished if scratched

The disadvantages of natural stone

  • Ongoing re-sealing program is required
  • ?Limited chemical and stain resistance
  • Higher installation costs than ceramic tile
  • Product received seldom looks like the sample

Since granite kitchen countertops represent a major investment, homeowners naturally want to know the facts about care of granite countertops. Granite is a harder stone than marble, and the care for it is generally more simple than it is for marble. However, whichever stone is used for countertops, one of the most important principles of care of granite countertops is that you should always wipe spills immediately. Granite is somewhat absorbent, and can absorb stains if spills are left any length of time.

A mild solution of dish washing liquid in warm water is fine for routine care of granite countertops. Using a soft cloth, give it a quick wipe every day. Stains are unlikely is the stone is sealed with a countertop sealant, but they can still happen.

In severe cases, a stain may require a granite cleansing poultice. A poultice for care of granite countertops can be made by combining a tablespoon or two of dish soap with a cup of white flour and enough water to make a paste. To use the paste, spread it over the stain, and lay plastic wrap over the paste. By letting this set overnight, the flour will have time to absorb the stain back out of the granite counter top surface.

Molding plaster can also be made into a poultice for care of granite countertops. Combine it with bleach and use the paste on stains that are not from greasy sources. Stains such as ink or wine might respond to this treatment. For oily stains, use water instead of bleach to make this poultice.

Hydrogen peroxide is safe to use for care of granite countertops and can be combined with ammonia to treat food stains like tea or coffee. Peroxide is more suited to light colored granite countertops, however, since it has something of a bleaching action. It can also be used with flour in place of dish soap to make a paste to clean greasy stains.

Coasters are a good idea under any drinks, and you should also be careful not to set hot pots directly on granite counters. Since granite counters are growing in popularity, it is possible to find special cleaners designed for care of granite countertops. It is also recommended that the countertop be resealed by the installing company every couple of years. The professional granite installer can also polish away scratches for you.

Certainly if you are looking for something that really provides a statement to your home as well as looking absolutely beautiful then you could do no worse than deciding to have marble flooring installed. In this article we will look closely at what marble flooring is and why it is a suitable choice for most homes.

In fact during the last 10 years many hard stone products such as marble and granite have seen an incredible growth in their sales (around 2,000%). The sales of marble flooring alone have increased by about 400% during the last five years. Certainly homeowner's how now just begun to discover the advantages that come with having marble flooring as well as countertops, back splashes and fireplace surrounds etc., installed in their homes.

If you were to visit , or many of the other warm countries around the world you will see the abundant use of marble flooring in their homes. Although for many years marble was only quarried in for used in building but today it is now being quarried in , , and even . In fact the market for marble flooring in homes in warmer climates is very huge and the quality and finish of this flooring is very high. Because it comes in a varying range of natural patterns and colors all of which have the natural pattern of veins running through it the choice of marble flooring to select from is immense and this is one reason as to why marble flooring never seems to go out of vogue.

As marble flooring is a natural product is has a wide range of stain resistance properties to it although orange juice, nail polish remover, shampoo and even water could actually cause serious stains to certain types of marble. Therefore it is important that any marble flooring you do have installed is cleaned and resealed professionally every 9 to 18 months in order that it is stays in the best condition possible and so will last for years to come. Normally when a marble floor is first laid it will be treated with a stain resistant sealant and this normally protects it for about 10 years and then after this period it should then be resealed. However it is important that any spills which do occur on the marble flooring are cleaned up straight away and the more acidic the liquid the more likely it is to cause a stain. Yet if the marble flooring does become stained then it can easily be removed by a professional. So other than ensuring that you keep your marble floors clean they need little or no maintenance.
